Health Informatics for Health Information Technology Professionals
Click here to REGISTER HI 101 is an intensive program introducing key concepts, issues, applications and technologies in Applied Health Informatics. 1) Experience the full program, which includes the one-day onsite overview session and the online program (with online sessions and access to about 90 hours of lectures viewed at the registrants convenience). By choosing to participate in the full program, the participant will deepen the one-day overview with a broad, comprehensive introduction to Health Informatics. In this case, the registrant obtains access to our large archive of recorded videos of leading Health Informatics experts, as well as being able to participate in monthly web cast question and answer sessions and online discussion forum/board facilities 2) Participate in the one-day overview session only. Dominic Covvey is the President and Director of the National Institutes of Health Informatics and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo in the schools of Pharmacy and Optometry. His interests lie in the area of Health Informatics, particularly at the intersection of health system problems and computer science research. He is currently working in several areas including: the development of workflow support systems in healthcare settings, the economics of information and communications technology in the health system, the development of health informatics curricula and programs, approaches to the definition of an electronic health record and the design of collaboration support systems for researchers. He has worked in the past in the areas of image understanding applied to the analysis of x-ray movies of the contrasted left chamber of the beating heart, and database techniques applied to the definition and development of clinical information systems. He began his research career in a major academic medical center, where he spent 15 years as a senior research fellow. Professor Covvey then spent 15 years in the consulting industry, having created and led several consulting companies focused on the realization of the value of IT in support of the health system. He also served as a vice-president in a major healthcare consulting company leading its information systems practice. He later became a Full Professor at the University of Waterloo and founded and led the Waterloo Institute for Health Informatics Research (WIHIR) for 7 years. His work in industry addressed areas such as strategic IT planning, the audit of information systems organizations, new methods for information system procurement, clinical laboratory restructuring, IT capabilities-based re-engineering, and management education. He has served hundreds of clients in U.S. and Canadian health organizations, government agencies, and private companies. During both his academic and industrial careers he received a number of research grants, including those from CIHR, NSERC, the Heart Foundation, and industry. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, a Fellow of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, a senior Life Member of the IEEE, a Life Member of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, and an Information Technology Certified Professional and Life Member of the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS).
